Avid Trails + the Y: Bringing Avid Stations™ to the Hunterdon County YMCA

Building Fitness and Adventure with YMCA.

The Y is all about strengthening communities through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility – all things we can certainly get behind. After all, building trails, community bike parks and outdoor fitness stations align pretty nicely with that mission.

So, needless to say, we were pretty excited when the Hunterdon County YMCA tapped our team to design and build a set of unique Avid Stations™ along the trail surrounding their 22 acre property in Annandale, New Jersey. The site has incredible views, overlooking the Round Valley Reservoir and surrounded by the rolling farmlands and forested ridges of the New Jersey Highlands, making it a perfect location for an outdoor workout.

With over 8,000 members of all ages and ability levels, bootcamps and classes of every type, and public access to the trail, it was a great opportunity to create Stations that are both fun to play on and great for working out. As with all of our fitness stations and Avid Fit Pods™, our goal was to build stuff that works well for individuals but also serves large groups working out together, building on the Y’s tradition of creating a sense of community.

To meet the budget requirements of the non-profit Y, we redesigned five of our existing stations to be constructed out of lumber as opposed to our typical cast-in-place concrete. This is a great low cost alternative to traditional Avid Station construction and one we’re excited to roll out to other Ys in the near future. We couldn’t be happier with how they turned out, and are particularly excited to see how flexible, inventive, spontaneous and adventurous they encourage users to be. And that’s what it’s all about, right? Getting fit and having fun while you’re at it.
